Another Year of Exceeding Expectations

One of North Lawndale College Prep’s many traditions is that incoming freshmen spend their first day of school at DePaul University. It is a subtle reminder that NLCP believes every student is expected not just to graduate high school, but to go to and succeed in college.

The message of high expectations was not lost on Chasity Atkins, Valedictorian for the Collins Class of 2015.  As Chasity said during her graduation speech, “The teachers and staff demanded excellence from us whether or not we wanted to give it.  They set the bar high and challenged us to live up to it.”

Did they ever!

On the afternoon of Friday, June 5, 2015, 160 seniors walked across the stage to accept their diplomas and officially graduate from NLCP. While there were many congratulations shared throughout the ceremony, everyone—especially Sidney Trotter, Valedictorian for the Christiana Class of 2015--spoke of the future.  Sidney told her classmates that, “It must not stop here.  We are charged with building tomorrow.  I believe we can. I believe we will.” There is no doubt that these seniors will rise to Sidney’s challenge.

The Class of 2015 has been awarded over $9 million in scholarships to date. All of the seniors have been accepted to a college. Some will be heading to schools such as the University of Illinois, Colby-Sawyer College and Valparaiso University with strong ties to NLCP. Others will be forming new bonds and paving the way for future NLCP graduates at colleges like Michigan State University and Trinity College.

More than 40 of these graduates the will be the first recipients of Phoenix Pact scholarships.  The Phoenix Pact is a simple guarantee: If a student graduates NLCP with a cumulative, weighted GPA of 3.0 or better, and attends an approved college, the Phoenix Pact Fund will provide a scholarship to reduce or eliminate any “out-of-pocket” cost to the family and the college will provide a university scholarship to ensure that the student’s ultimate loan costs are manageable.

This guarantee ensures that students can attend the college where they are most likely to be successful, rather than simply the college they can afford. You can learn more about The Phoenix Pact here.

Whatever challenges these graduates may face, we know they will continue to exceed our expectations and make a lasting impact wherever they go. From the entire NLCP family: Congratulations to NLCP's Class of 2015!
