When people think of “school,” too many think of tests, homework, or worse bad cafeteria food.  Yes, that’s part of it, but at NLCP, we also think of community—a “beloved community” in fact.  This was on proud display this past week at our Welcome Back BBQs enjoyed by hundreds of parents and students.

This summer was a time to grow, not rest, for NLCP’s English teacher Tiffani Watson.  Ms. Watson won a prestigious National Endowment for the Humanities grant to study in England for the summer.

 
School Is Open!

NLCP’s doors have opened for another school year.  Teachers are ready to teach college readiness skills and higher order thinking skills.  Counselors are ready to show our students how to find their inner strength and be change agents for a better day.  Collectively, we are fired up and ready to give all we have in service to the 900 students coming through our doors.  That is how it should be.  But that is not all it can be.  What if we flipped the script?  What if we focused on what our students are about to give us?

NLCP Alumna Paradise Clark wanted to find something to do over the summer that would advance her career.  NLCP’s new “Social Capital” program came to the rescue, landing her an internship with Engineered Glass Products, a manufacturer of specialty and heat-resistant glass products on Chicago’s South Side.
