Dear NLCP Faculty

How to say "Hey" on the First Day of School..,

My father once went through 14 hours of surgery to save his right leg. When the surgery was done he struggled to consciousness. My mom, at his side through every moment, held his face in her hands, caught his eyes and said, "Hey!"

Say "HEY" on the first day of school as one greeting a much beloved who has been long asleep.

About a year ago, I misplaced my wedding ring and couldn't find it for two months. When I found it buried in my socks drawer I said, "HEY!"
Say "HEY" on the first day of school as one discovering a ring that summons your most solemn promise.

Think of your favorite meal in your favorite restaurant with a generous pour of your favorite wine. You are starving. The meal is placed before you and you say, "HEY!"
Say "HEY" on the first day of school as one anticipating a glorious meal.

When you greet our students on the first day of school, what you believe you are seeing will shape how you say "HEY!"

Each student is a Rubik’s Cube.
Each student’s brain has more neurons than there are stars in the galaxy.

If you believe you are greeting one who longs to be awake,
If you believe you are finding a ring that summons your solemn promise,
if you believe you are beginning a banquet that will fill your hunger for meaning and slake your thirst for justice..., well, then we will have the school our students deserve.

HEY!
